Gustavo Mendez-Liska
is a Venezuelan visual artist living in Vienna. His works combine geometric and three-dimensional forms, heavily influenced by his Latin American cultural heritage. He studied at the Instituto de Arte Federico Brandt in Caracas and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and he completed a carpentry apprenticeship in 2012. This craftsmanship gives his work a unique materiality and structure. Mendez-Liska uses mixed techniques on wood and canvas to create abstract works that explore identity and cultural heritage, drawing on movements such as Constructivism and Neoplasticism, including De Stijl and Bauhaus.
In series such as „La Frontera de la Inquietud“ („The Border of Inquietude“), he uses geometric forms and assemblages that reflect his artistic and cultural influences. His works address human existence and its social context through abstraction, exploring balance and tension within space. Although he resides in Austria, he retains his cultural heritage, with a notable influence of Latin American artists such as Jesús Soto and Carlos Cruz-Diez in his works. *Heritage* is a recurring theme that Mendez-Liska revisits and reinterprets through a modern, multicultural perspective within the realm of geometric art.

Wenzel Kolar
is an explorer on a journey through his own subconscious. The 28-year-old Czech artist has chosen Vienna as his creative home since 2017. His works invite viewers to immerse themselves in a mysterious, scarcely rational world. Abstract-logical relationships collide in his creations, sparking a dialogue that unfolds through the artistic process.
Kolar combines traditional painting with spray techniques on various materials, including jute fabric and mesh vinyl, infusing his work with a playful, intriguing quality. He deconstructs what exists and ultimately fuses the elements into a form that allows viewers to perceive the assembled structure from multiple perspectives simultaneously, enabling a shift between different layers of reality.
The empty space in his works does not act as a passive element but instead grants the forms movement through its presence. These forms seem to float in a liquid substance, confined by the format that holds them in this territory. A recurring play between sharpness and softness runs through Kolar’s works, lending them a vibrant dynamism. His geometric structures emerge spontaneously yet follow an intuitive creative process. Kolar acts much like a photographer, observing an ever-changing subject and following his instinctive sense of composition to capture the perfect moment. This leaves an aura of mystery, like a dark, constantly shifting silhouette that invites individual interpretation.

Project organized by the São Mamede Gallery in which the artist Gustavo Mendez-Liska presents a series of works with a profound commitment to painting and sculpture, whose practices are linked to the constant refinement of techniques and treatments of form, colour, light and space. In Gustavo’s case, the meditative character and dense
geometric constructions in which he works the space as the body of the work, the spectator as the body of a structure that establishes a temporal suspension that hovers over the concept of his research that comes from the beginning, there in Caracas in his based on the concretism and geometric structures of the great South American masters.
He crossed the ocean, here in Austria he continues his tireless research based on his based on his fellow countrymen, not letting escape his keen curiosity to broaden his horizons beyond the pictorial technique of painting and drawing, today Gustavo presents us with not only a group of work that I can consider powerful and dynamic graphic structures, but also a strong unfolding and knowledge of his research, now influenced by the European school, specifically the Italian Arte Povera movement, working on the limits of counter culture and of great masters such as Giuseppe Penone, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, to name but a few of them.
In the work it is not enough just to demonstrate through cut-outs, overlaps, lines and black masses black that invades the pictorial space, but we can also feel, visualize, penetrate in this world of plots and locks that Gustavo presents us with.
This body of work produced between 2018 and 2023 is presented to us in a globalised, universal because Gustavo’s work could be produced anywhere in the world.
Here and in all other places and continents that want to appreciate and connect with Gustavo’s work is to allow us to have a piece of himself, of his story and of his journey the streets, alleys and lanes of a cold Vienna, but which, with Gustavo’s work, becomes warm and welcoming.
